The International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) is a handgun sport that originated in 1996. While IDPA shares some similarities with USPSA, the primary emphasis is on situational shooting scenarios which might be encountered by a lawfully armed citizen defending self or others. Anyone who is interested but has not participated in this sport is suggested to refer to the IDPA website idpa.com.  There are also numerous IDPA videos available on YouTube that can you can watch.

One of the unique facets of this sport is that it is very approachable for the new or average shooter, and yet it is fun, challenging, and rewarding for the experienced shooter.  The founders developed the sport so that practical gear and practical firearms may be used competitively.  The main goal is to test the skill and ability of the individual, not equipment or gamesmanship.

Upcoming Matches

IDPA matches are scheduled on the first Sunday of the month year-round, weather permitting.

Pre-registration is conducted on the Practiscore website. This system saves us time during on-site registration, and allows you to squad with your friends. However, you still need to visit on-site registration to pay your entry fee, and sign your waiver

On-site registration is conducted at the scoring shack across from Bay 4 from 11:00 to 12:00.   Even if you registered online, you still need to stop-by registration to pay your match fee and hand-in a waiver. In order to facilitate a timely start to the match, registration closes promptly at 12:00.

About Our Matches

Our matches are open to the public. While we believe all shooters should be NRA members this is not mandatory.

  • Cherokee Gun Club is a COLD RANGE. Firearms entering or on the property will remain unloaded and holstered (magazine well empty) until a shooter is instructed by a Safety Officer to load.
  • Unloaded Firearms (no ammunition present) may only be handled in the designated Safe Areas on the range.
  • Firearms are not to be handled in the parking areas. Please be sure your firearm is unloaded before arriving on club property.
  • The speed limit on Cherokee Gun Club property is 10 MPH.
  • Observers attending the match must complete the club waiver as well as have eye and ear protection. Observers must remain within the pistol bay area of CGC property.

Always Remember and Observe the Four Cardinal Rules of Firearm Handling:

  1. Treat all guns as if they are loaded.
  2. Never point a gun at something you’re not prepared to destroy.
  3. Always be sure of your target and what is beyond it.
  4. Keep your finger off the trigger until you sights are on the target.

No shooting is permitted before the match. Both eye and ear protection are required by club rules for everyone, shooters and guests. Only Cherokee Gun Club members and their registered guests are allowed to use the ranges after a match.   Our range is a private club so no driving around the facility is permitted unless accompanied by a CGC Member.  Children under age 8 are not permitted on the ranges.
